Well, that's the only word I can use to describe it. It starts off with a song, Seulement Pour Les Alienes, that looks a bit like one of their previous songs.. at first. The music is more intense now and the singing is insane. I did not like the first song at first but after a few listens I so got into the flow of feeling. The second song is Ishi. The music begins in the same deep sense way as previous and when the song starts shivers are sent down my spine. The song now has changed to a deep mix of the same voice. The music stays "new" altrough the piece I can listen to this one fifty times in a row without getting bored... At about 4 minutes past the beginning there is a section which gives it a climax. The third song is Meisekiyume now THIS is the true masterpiece in this demo. The word "Insane" cannot even begin to explain this song. A simply perfect mix of song and music ripple down from the air troughout the whole song and in words I cannot describe how it makes you feel if you listen to it at the right time.

Well, long made short. This demo is as good as a demo can be. If a whole CD would look like this then these guys have reached the peak.

I also happen to know OF the keyboardist and the singer. The singer is a real opera singer and by far the best one I've heard in Finland at his age and there have never been such long applause after anyone sang like there is after this guy finishes a song on the Opera stage. ( I am an opera singer myself and hence I know of him). In this music he twists his voice and offcourse doesn't go all the way Opera, cause that's simply not the idea. The keyboardist is a amazing music maker. His fingers fly over the keyboard and can create just about anything.

I am really glad these guys chose to actually USE their artistic talents to make real music and not just the normal metal stuff you today can even hear on the radio, that's all POP-ROCK to me.

Get these songs! However.. if you aren't a real listener or freak.. you will never appreciate this music as much as it should be. There are those that listen to metal for the feeling and sound... and there are those that listen to it as a substitute for POP, something to bob their head to. Hope your in the first category.

The second of two EPs which represent the total output of ABERRANT VASCULAR, "Thyestes" (2005) contains three tracks running for a total of around 13 minutes.

The music here is looser, and less structured than the first EP. The brief opening "Seulement Pour Les Alienes" is a quick dash through some swirling keyboards and frantic guitar in the style of SYMPHONY X, before some brief high operatic vocals lead us into " Ishi". Here the sound is generally more chaotic, with less melodic operatic vocals than appeared on the first EP. There is still plenty of pace and melody changing, and a general resemblance with bands such as THERION, but less so with RHAPSODY this time.

The third and final track " Meisekiyume" features a mixture of growling and operatic male vocals, with symphonic keyboards and dramatic interludes. Once again, the sound tends to become chaotic, but shows the band to be adventurous, avant-garde, and experimental.

Those who enjoy the more challenging end of the prog metal spectrum will find this EP to be interesting and enjoyable. Clearly Aberrant Vascular are both original and exciting. They have the potential to make a great album, although they will need to develop a tighter sound if they are to enjoy any significant degree of success.

A year after their first EP Aberrant Vascular returned with a second EP, Thyestes, continuing from were the five some left off on Actaeon. What a difference a year makes, this EP shows that the band is improving fast and capable of producing very interesting metal. Stylistically Thyestes is very much in the same vein as Actaeon, but this time the three songs presented here are far more cohesive and well thought out. These songs flow much better than their previous work whilst still retaining a unique feel, primarily due to the very prominent and virtuoso keyboard playing without the virtuoso guitar playing that normally accompanies metal bands with such a line-up. Vocally, Thyestes is much better than Actaeon as well due to the fact that Lumi has dropped his use of death-metal growls, something I felt didn’t work at all well. The band seems to have gelled and the result has been a very impressive EP that leaves the listener wanting to hear what else this band is capable of doing. The music is coherent and powerful, and the songs offer a very strong, doom laden atmosphere created through some intense playing. I suggest in my review for Actaeon that the band should create longer songs to fully explore their ideas, but they have proved that they didn’t need to, the songs are about the same length as before but work much better. This EP is well worth listening to and we can only hope that the band produce a full album as I would definitely give that a listen.

After listening to Aberrant Vascular’s debut EP several times and writing a review for it, I turned my attention to this album, their second EP. It clocks in at a little over thirteen minutes, but what a thirteen minutes it is. Based solely on the first EP, I said that I would buy their first studio album whenever it comes out, but now I’m certain I will. All the strengths of their first EP are present and improved on this effort, and the weaknesses are gone. It’s not perfect, far from it, but it is a great EP. As an added bonus, you can download it for free (along with their first EP) from their web site (there’s a link in the band’s progarchives profile page), so you don’t have to risk spending money on a band you might not like. Instead, you get to try them for free, and I can tell you it’s worth it, because this is a band that’s going to go on to become one of avant-garde progressive metal’s biggest names. The band formed with the goal of doing something inventive and new while still retaining a metal feel to their music, and they have very much succeeded. They are clearly metal, but it is some of the most intelligent metal I’ve ever heard. As the guitar blazes on top of perfectly placed sound effects, we are treated to a wonderful vocal performance (they’ve really cleaned up the vocals from the debut). One of my main complaints about the debut was that the songs felt like they dragged on too long, but here that’s not at all the case. Instead, we are treated to thirteen minutes of great music where not one is extraneous. There are three songs, and each is great. The first song is quite short and serves merely as an opener, introducing what is to come. Nevertheless, it should not be ignored, because it is a great song. Ishi is where the band really hit their stride, with the excellent vocals I talked about before carrying the song over great metal guitar. On the final track, we are treated to great drumming as well and far more avant-garde influences than on either of the other two songs (whose avant-garde influences were anything but slight). Think of this not as progressive metal (which it admittedly is), but as progressive music. While it is, in a technical sense, metal, it truly transcends all established boundaries, as I expect from bands that truly aspire to greatness. Not a wee bit derivative, on this album, Aberrant Vascular have really slid into a sound they can call their own, carving out a unique niche in the progressive world. All I can say is, I can’t wait for their first studio album to come out. And need I remind you, this album is completely FREE courtesy of the band. This is an opportunity you CANNOT miss!

Miasma

Varauksettoman ihailuni osakseen saanut viime vuonna julkaistu Actaeon-demo on saanut seuraajan. Linja on edelleen avantgardistinen oopperametalli, mutta täällä kerta Aberrant Vascular ei kuulosta ihan yhtä tummasävyiseltä, mistä ehkä kielii osaltaan todella vaalea kansikin. Näin yhtye on onnistunut tekemään lisää pesäeroa nykyään jonkin verran lässähtäneeseen Arcturukseen.

Seulement pour les alienes on lyhyt pariminuuttinen hiukan keskeneräisen oloinen pala, joka tavallaan vain johdattaa kuulijan hulluuteen, jonka Ishi varsinaisesti pistää alulle. Jälkimmäinen on eniten Actaeonin kaltaista outoilua. Viimeisenä tuleva Meiskiyume menee vielä askeleen pidemmälle, sillä kappaleessa on kieroja käänteitä vielä enemmän kun olisi voinut odottaa.

Yleisesti ottaen vokalisti Lumin oopperajollotusta on käytetty entistä reilummin hyväksi, mutta ikävä kyllä erittäin hienolta edellisellä julkaisulla kuulostaneesta örinäpuheäänestä on luovuttu.

Kokonaisuutena Thyestes on edelleen vaikuttava kokonaisuus, mutta kappaleet eivät ole ihan niin synkällä tavalla vangitsevia kuin Actaeonilla. Ehkä tämä alkaa olla miltei liian vaikeaa musiikkia jopa minulle. Joka tapauksessa tämä bändi on edelleen helposti suomen underground-ympäröiden kirkkainta kärkeä.

Imperiumi

Toisella Thyestes- demolla Aberrant Vascular sukeltaa vielä rohkeammin avantgarden toisinaan hyvinkin irrationaalisena näyttäytyvään kuiluun. ”Operatic avantgarde metal” -kategoriaan itsensä luokitelleen yhtyeen tyyli on alusta saakka ollut siitä erikoinen, että välillä kappaleiden elementeillä ei tuntuisi olevan mitään yhdistävää tekijää keskenään, mutta silti kaikkien näiden elementtien summa luo eheän kokonaisuuden. Vertailut Arcturukseen ovat varmasti ymmärrettäviä, mutta silti vain suuntaa antavia, koska mielestäni bändi on selkeästi löytänyt oman tyylinsä, jota voi vain kuvata bändin omalla nimellä.

Kolme uutta kappaletta esittelevä Thyestes tarjoaa vielä vähemmän helppoa otepintaa kuin aiempi Actaeon -demo, joten näin ollen kansissa oleva tiedotus ”Several listenings required” on syytä ottaa todesta. Materiaali on demolla hyvin vaihtelevaa. Demon aloittaa kappale Seulement Pour Les Alienes, joka hämmentää niin lyhyellä kestollaan, kuin myös melko erikoisilla köörilauluilla jättäen kuuntelijan yhdeksi suureksi kysymysmerkiksi. Toisena jyrähtää sitten tämän demon ehdoton ässä, Ishi, jossa katsoisin bändin ”operatic avantgarde metal” määritteen jokaisen osan sulaneen mainioksi kombinaatioksi. Viimeinen kappale Meisekiyume jää puolestaan muutamia hienoja laulumelodioita lukuun ottamatta hieman mitäänsanomattomaksi keskitason kappaleeksi. Tunnelmaltaan tummien kappaleiden monitasoisuus jättää kuitenkin pääosin sen mukavan kutinan kuunnella ne uudestaan. Bändin ehdoton valtti on laulaja Lumi, jonka laaja ääniala oopperatyylisessä ilmaisussa luo todella miellyttävän kontrastin laulun ja musiikin välille.

Koska kyseessä on demo, niin soundipuolta ei yleensä kritisoida kovin rankalla kädellä, mutta mielestäni ensimmäisellä demolla soundit olivat orgaanisemmat ja eri elementit paremmin esillä sekä keskinäisessä balanssissa kuin Thyestes -demolla. Tällä demolla yhtyeen musiikki kuulostaa hieman enemmän kliinisemmältä ja tämän kaltaisella musiikille kuuluva mahtipontinen syvyysvaikutelma ei pääse syntymään. Tarvittavat ainekset ovat kuitenkin mielestäni kasassa ja kun reseptin mittasuhteet saadaan vielä kohdalleen, niin yhtyeeltä voi odottaa todella vahvoja näyttöjä.

Hamara/Aadolfin kotihelvetti

Nimikin kertoo että jotain kummallista on odotettavissa ja mielleyhtymä ei muodostu ihan suotta. Ensimmäisenä tulee mieleen jo esikuvinakin mainittu Arcturus, ainakin sen verran monesta suunnasta tätä soppaa hämmennetään. Myös vokalisointi muistuttaa selkeästi Arcturuksen Garmin ääntelyä. Aberrant Vascularia kuuntelee varsin mieluusti, joskin ehkä pitäisin vielä enemmän jos näitä musiikin aiheuttamia kieroja mielikuvia voitaisiin luoda hiukan enemmän kitaran avulla. Nyt kaikki mieleenjäävä venkoilu on hyvin pitkälti syntikoiden aikaansaannosta. Kerrassaan mielenkiintoista musiikkia, jota ei takuulla ole tehty minkäänlaista menestystä silmälläpitäen. Hauskinta tässä on se että musiikki on saatu kuulostamaan tahallaan ristiriitaisilla ja väärillä nuoteilla varsin hienolta. En tiedä vaatiiko se sitten nyrjähtänytttä sävelkorvaa tai onko kyse vaan vahingosta. Tai kestäisikö tätä edes sulatella levyn mittaa.

Soundi

Vaasalainen Aberrant Vascular on lähtenyt etsimään kokonaan uusia polkuja metallin saralta. Taival ei ole helppo. Jo ensimmäisellä demollaan yhtye osoitti, että sillä on orastava perusajatus siitä, minkälaista musiikkia yhtye haluaa tehdä, mutta meno oli vielä perin haparoivaa.

Yhtyeen avantgardistinen industrial- ja goottisekoitus koittaa tavoittaa Therioninkin jossakin pisteessä, ja loppujen lopuksi yhtyeen musiikki herättää lievän huvittuneisuuden ohella myönteisiä ajatuksia: nämä sentään yrittävät. Kokonaisuus on kuitenkin edelleen hajanainen, ja kappaleissa on selvästi liikaa tavaraa. Plussaa bändi saa oopperalaulusta, miinusta tulee sävellysten rikkonaisuudesta. Ja iso plussa siitä, että yhtye uskaltaa kokeilla rohkeasti ja etsiä omaa linjaansa. Tie voi olla pitkä ja kivinen, mutta toivottavasti se kannattaa tarpoa läpi. Ajan kanssa.
